While most students served at more than 50 sites across Lincoln during Project Impact on Sept. 3, some volunteered on campus to plant ten new trees. With these ten additions, 38 new trees have been planted on campus over the last three years.
The trees provide new life to Union’s Joshua C. Turner Arboretum — home to more than 100 species of trees and shrubs. Some of the trees planted when the campus over the last 135 years have reached the natural end of their life while others face new pressures from pests and disease.A few weeks ago, arborists removed eleven trees from campus that were unhealthy, including ash trees in front of the Thunderdome and behind Rees Hall.
Of the ten trees, nine were donated by the Nebraska Forest Service and PlantNebraska while one, the Shumard oak, was purchased by the university. The new trees planted this year are:
- two black cherries, one near the Thunderdome and one by the tennis courts,
- one dwarf Chinkapin oak behind the Thunderdome,
- two Sargent oaks in front of the Thunderdome,
- one Shumard oak on the front of campus near the Rock Pile,
- two baldcypress behind Rees Hall,
- two American lindens on the Prescott Avenue side of Culver Hall.
