It was during a tent meeting in Mullen, Neb., in 1919 that Frank and Nellie Lake accepted the Seventh-day Adventist message. Believing in the benefits of Christian education, they sent all three of their sons to Shelton Academy (later called Platte Valley Academy). Since that time, several generations of Lakes have attended Adventist schools, including Union College.

Because of Frank and Nellie’s positive influence and strong commitment to Christian education, their grandson, Melvin ’63, and his wife, Karen Lair (’62) Lake decided to establish an endowed scholarship in Frank and Nellie’s honor.

The Lakes donated a piece of farm land near Hebron, Neb., to Union College. This land has been in the family for generations and at one time belonged to Frank and Nellie. The college then sold the property and invested the proceeds to create an annual income. Scholarships will be awarded each year to Union College students from rural or small town backgrounds.

After establishing their scholarship, the Lakes commented, “Gifting real estate allowed an easy transition of property, excellent tax advantages and the satisfaction of establishing an on-going scholarship fund in honor of our beloved grandparents.”
