Swimming is fun and healthy, a way to meet new friends, and challenging for almost all ages. The Reiner Wellness Center offers swimming lessons to preschoolers—who are just beginning to be comfortable in water — all the way to more advanced swimmers (Level 6). Below are descriptions of each swimming level as well as registration information and class schedules.
Swimming levels
Preschool lessons (ages 3–4 years)
Preschool 1: Introduction to Water and Some Fear of Water)
- Enter water by stepping in from ramp, deck or low height
- Exit water using ladder, ramp or side
- Blow Bubbles, three seconds
- Submerge mouth, nose and eyes
- Submerge entire head
- Open eyes underwater and retrieve a submerged object
- Comfortably lay on back with ears submerged
- Back float, five seconds
- Back glide, two body lengths and recover to a vertical position
- Front glide, two body lengths and recover to a vertical position
- Front Float, 1-2 seconds
- Roll from front to back
- Roll from back to front
- Arm and hand treading actions
- Flutter kicking on front and back
- Combined arm and leg actions on front
- Combined arm and leg actions on back
Exit assessment:
- Enter the water independently using either the ramp or side, travel at least 5 yards, submerge to mouth and blow bubbles for three seconds, then safely exit the water.
- Comfortably lay on their back with their ears in the water.
- While in shallow water, glide on front for at least 2 body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for 5 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.
All skills and exit assessment may be completed with support and assistance from an instructor.
Preschool 2: Basic Introduction to Water Skills
Skills that they will learn:
- Enter water by stepping in from deck or low height
- Exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Bobbing, seven times
- Blow bubbles, four seconds
- Hold breath underwater for four seconds
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front float, three seconds
- Back float, ten seconds
- Front glide and recover to a vertical position
- Back glide and recover to a vertical position
- Roll from front to back
- Roll from back to front
- Tread water, five seconds
- Alternating arm and leg actions on front
- Finning arm action on back
- Combined arm and leg actions on back
Exit assessment: independent
- Glide on front at least two body lengths, roll to back, float on back for 10 seconds, then recover to a vertical position.
- Glide on back for at least two body lengths, roll to front, then recover to a vertical position.
- Swim using combined arm and leg actions on front for at least three body lengths, roll to back, float for 10 seconds, then continue swimming on back for at least three body lengths.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
School age levels (5+)
Level 1: Introduction to Water Skills
- Enter water using ramps, steps or side
- Exit water using ladder, steps or side
- Blow bubbles for six seconds
- Hold breath underwater for seven seconds
- Bobbing 10 times
- Open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects
- Front glide and recover to a vertical position
- Back glide and recover to a vertical position
- Front float for six seconds
- Back float for 15 seconds
- Roll from front to back
- Roll from back to front
- Treading water for 10 Seconds
- Alternating leg and arm actions on front
- Alternating leg and arm action on back
- Combined leg and arm actions on back
Exit assessment: independent
- Enter independently, bob five times, travel at least five yards using alternating leg and arm actions on front (Big Arms), then safely exit the water.
- Enter independently, travel at least five yards using alternating leg and arm actions on back (back crawl or finning)
- Glide on front at least two body lengths, then roll to back and float on back for five seconds and recover to a vertical position.
- Glide on back at least two body lengths, then roll to front and recover to a vertical position.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
Level 2: Fundamental Aquatic Skills (Introduction to Strokes)
- Enter the water by jumping from the side
- Exit the water using the side
- Hold breath underwater for 10 seconds
- Bobbing, 15 times
- Retrieve submerged object 4 times in a row
- Front glide, 10 feet
- Back glide, 10 feet
- Back float, 20 seconds
- Front float, 10 seconds
- Change direction while swimming
- Tread water, 20 seconds
- Rotary breathing, 7 times in a row with proper technique
- Front crawl with rotary breathing, 15 feet
- Back crawl, 15 feet
- Elementary backstroke, 15 feet
Exit assessment: independent
- Jump into chest deep water, push off the bottom of the pool, move into a treading position for at least 20 seconds, turn around and return to the side.
- Perform a back glide for five feet, float for 10 seconds, continue swimming using the elementary backstroke.
- Perform a front glide for five feet, continue swimming the front crawl with rotary breathing for another 10 feet.
- Perform a back glide for five feet, roll to front, front float for five seconds, roll to back, and swim back to the side using the back crawl.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
Level 3: Stroke Development
- Jump into deep water from the side, recover to the surface and exit the pool
- Back float, 30 seconds
- Rotary breathing
- Front crawl with rotary breathing, 25 feet (one length)
- Back crawl, 25 feet (one length)
- Elementary backstroke, 25 feet (one length)
- Scissors kick
- Breaststroke kick
- Dolphin kick
- Tread water, one minute
- Sitting dive
- Kneeling dive
Exit assessment: independent
- Jump into the deep end, recover to the surface, swim front crawl with rotary breathing to the middle of the pool. Tread water for 1 minute.
- Jump into the deep end, recover to the surface, swim back crawl to the middle of the pool, change position as necessary and swim the rest of the length with elementary backstroke.
- Demonstrate 10 yards each of scissors kick, breaststroke kick and dolphin kick with correct technique.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
Level 4: Stroke Improvement
- Kneeling dive
- Stride/standing dive
- Tread water for two minutes
- Tread water using two different kicks, modified scissors, modified breaststroke, or rotary)
- Front crawl with rotary breathing for one lap of the pool
- Elementary backstroke, one lap
- Breaststroke for 50 feet (½ a length)
- Back crawl for one lap of the pool
- Butterfly for 50 feet (½ a length)
- Sidestroke for 50 feet (½ a length)
- Open turn on the front
- Open turn on back
Exit assessment: independent
- Jump into the deep end, recover to the surface, swim front crawl with rotary breathing 1 length of the pool, then use a front open turn to change direction and swim backstroke 1 length of the pool.
- Start at the shallow end. Swim breaststroke to the middle of the pool, change position as necessary and swim elementary backstroke to the end of the pool.
- Demonstrate 50 feet each of butterfly and sidestroke.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
Level 5: Stroke Refinement
- Front Crawl, two laps
- Back Crawl, two laps
- Elementary Backstroke, two laps
- Breaststroke, one lap
- Sidestroke, one lap
- Butterfly, ½ lap
- Tread water, five minutes
- Tread water, using only legs, one minutes
- Front flip turn
- Back flip turn
- Shallow angle dive
- Swim continuously for five minutes using appropriate flip turns
Exit assessment: independent
- Shallow angle dive into the deep end, swim front crawl one lap, then swim backstroke one lap, then swim elementary backstroke one lap, using appropriate flip turns throughout
- Demonstrate proper technique while swimming ½ a lap of breaststroke
- Demonstrate proper technique while swimming ½ a lap of butterfly
- Demonstrate proper technique while swimming ½ a lap of sidestroke
- Swim continuously for five minutes
All skills must be completed independently by the student.
Level 6: Stroke Mastery and Endurance
- Front crawl, 4 laps (200 Meters)
- Back crawl, four laps (200 Meters)
- Elementary backstroke, four laps (200 Meters)
- Breaststroke, two laps (100 Meters)
- Sidestroke, two laps (100 Meters)
- Butterfly, one lap (50 Meters)
- Tread water, 10 minutes
- Front flip turn
- Back flip turn
- Racing start
- Surface dives
- Swim 10 laps (500 meters) without stopping using front crawl, back crawl, or breaststroke using appropriate turns.
Exit assessment: independent
- Swim 500 meters continuously using front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke using appropriate turns.
- Perform a racing start
- Demonstrate proper technique with each stroke for a designated distance.
All skills must be completed independently by the student.

Fall swimming lessons will be on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Swimming lesson policies
- There must be an adult 18 or over at the facility for the child during the entire swimming lesson.
- Our instructors do not take kids to the bathroom, so please keep an eye on your child’s class. If you see an instructor or lifeguard walking your child toward the door, please come and meet them.
- Lessons cannot be made up if they are missed, and we do not issue refunds.
- Please write these dates down because we do not send out reminders.
- No child over the age of 5 is permitted in the opposite sex locker room. If assistance is needed, family locker rooms are available.
Group swimming lesson cancelation policy
If you decide to withdraw from the swimming lesson session, it must be done more than three business days prior to the swimming lesson start date to receive a full refund. If the withdrawal is made with less than three business days before the start date, only a 75% refund will be given.
Private swimming lessons
Private swimming lessons for Fall 2024 are completely full. If you are interested in spring lessons, please fill out the form HERE!
Reiner Wellness Center also offers private swimming lessons. Private Swimming lessons are one on one 30 minute sessions with a student and an instructor. Private lessons are for all ages. We do offer semi-private lessons, two students and one instructor, but both students must be of similar ages and be at a similar skill level. Private lessons are scheduled through the office manager, and are only available during instructor availability. Instructor availability changes each semester.
