Kenneth LeRoy Franz, 89, of Berrien Springs, MI passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2026 at Corewell Health Lakeland Hospital in St. Joseph. Kenneth was born Oct. 4, 1936, in Ellendale, N.D., to Bennie and Irene (Sprouse) Franz. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Union College in Lincoln, Neb., and later earned his master’s degree from the University of Michigan. On July 26, 1959, he married Norma Arvidson in Madison, S.D. Kenneth dedicated his career to education, serving as a mathematics professor at Andrews University, where he was known for his patience and commitment to helping students understand and appreciate mathematics. In addition to teaching, he was a skilled mason who worked extensively with stone, brick, and concrete. Kenneth enjoyed tending his vegetable garden, photographing the world around him, reading, and continually expanding his knowledge. He had a lifelong fascination with history and could often be found watching documentaries or immersed in a good book. He also enjoyed spending time outdoors especially during the summertime, including keeping a watchful eye on the gophers around his property. Kenneth is survived by his wife Norma ’65; daughter, Julene Jackson; grandsons, Mason Bortz, Derek (Christina) Franz; great grandsons, Owen & Alex; brother, Jim (Robyn) ; sister, Lois Smith (’62); and daughter-in-law Debe Franz. Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dean; brother, Timothy and sister, JoAnn Hall.
