Why study evangelism at a university?

Soul-winning and Leadership Training is founded on the words of Jesus that we are all called to be the SALT of the earth (Matthew 5:13). God has commissioned His people to spread the gospel and the news of His soon return to all of the world. At SALT, we fulfill God’s commission by training young and old alike through traditional, historical methods of soul-winning honed by years of Adventist evangelism, along with the modern, technologically advanced and creative methods available to the church today.

SALT is unique in the landscape of evangelism schools because we can offer courses for college credit through professional and state-of-the-art instruction. Our hands-on component, a major part of the training, provides students with an opportunity to work alongside active churches to implement the church growth strategies they learn in class.

Founded in 2011 on the campus of Southern Adventist University and recently expanded to Union Adventist University, the program continues to grow and thrive. Many graduates of SALT take full-time positions as Gospel Workers, often alongside the It Is Written team. Through God’s grace, SALT continues to play a vital role in equipping God's people to fulfill the great commission of Matthew 28 and Revelation 14. As a SALT graduate, you will be well-equipped to share your faith and teach others to do the same.

Here's the roadmap to what you'll learn in the SALT evangelism school.

SALT curriculum

SALT is built around a 16-credit semester (17 for incoming freshmen required to take College Success).  NOTE: SALT fulfills the religion general education requirements* for all undergraduate majors taken at Union Adventist University.

RELP 220 - Introduction to Public Evangelism (3 credit hours with lab)
A study of the principles of planning and conducting a full, doctrinal evangelistic meeting with an introduction to the evangelism cycle, pre-work, and post-work — skill development is achieved through assisting with a local public evangelistic campaign and preaching a second campaign. Laboratory required.

RELT 141 - Christian Beliefs (3 credit hours)
Surveys fundamental Biblical doctrines of the Christian Church from a Seventh-day Adventist perspective.

RELP 365 - Personal Witnessing (3 credit hours with lab)
Designed to help students gain the knowledge and skills needed to share their faith through personal influence, conversation and Bible studies. Examines the beliefs of other churches and compares them with Adventist beliefs. Laboratory required.

RELT 177 - Christian Spirituality (3 credit hours)
Provides a basic introduction to Christian spirituality and spiritual growth. Using Christ as a model, key spiritual disciplines, such as prayer and Bible study, will be explored and applied as ways to enrich personal spirituality. Aspects of spiritual growth, such as understanding grace, obedience, faith and dependence on Christ, will be explored from a biblical and practical perspective.

RELB 251 - Daniel (3 credit hours)
An introduction to the narrative and prophetic portions of the book of Daniel rooted in its historical context, emphasizing the spiritual and prophetic applications relevant to Christian leadership and life.

RELP 225 - Evangelism Seminar (1 credit hour)
Students will gain exposure to key evangelism topics and learn from field experts through exposure to current, real-world experiences of soul winning, church growth and revitalization and evangelism practices. Areas covered include health evangelism, urban evangelism, literature evangelism, foreign missions, education, small groups and public evangelism.

*NOTE: Theology majors will substitute Beginning New Testament Greek I in place of Christian Beliefs. Beyond the religion general education requirements, education majors are also required to take one Ellen White class for North American Division Adventist teacher certification.

Frequently asked questions about SALT

How much does SALT cost?
If you're taking SALT for academic credit, you will pay Union tuition rates — currently $15,636 for the semester. However, as a full-time undergraduate student, you'll be eligible for many thousands in scholarships, grants, military benefits and federal financial aid — making your education at Union much more affordable.

The cost for non-credit participants is $3,300. If you have questions about payments, contact the cashier at cashier@uau.edu

Will I receive a certificate for completing the program?
Whether you will be taking SALT for credit or not, a fully accredited Bible Worker Certification is awarded to all qualifying SALT participants.

How does this program work if I'm a Union student?
You will focus on the SALT program for one semester, and all your courses will be those listed in the SALT curriculum. This will meet all of your undergraduate religion general education requirements, so you won't need to take additional religion courses for most majors.

Do I need a vehicle to participate in SALT?
Students are responsible for providing and maintaining their own transportation for outreach activities. If you don't have a vehicle, you may partner with someone who does.

What practical experience will I gain during SALT?
As a SALT participant, you not only learn about evangelism in the classroom, but you practice it in the real world. SALT includes weekly Bible work outreach, giving Bible studies in the community, knocking on doors, building relationships, partnering with and inspiring a local church, and assisting with a full-length evangelistic series. All of this is done with great mentors working with you and your Bible work partner, giving you the ability to learn directly from your instructors outside of the classroom.

Are food and housing provided?
For-credit SALT participants are considered full-time students of Union Adventist University and are eligible for regular student housing and meal plan options. Non-credit participants are responsible for their own lodging. Meal plans are available for both credit and non-credit participants.

Can I work or take other classes while participating in SALT?
Due to its intensity, SALT is not designed to be combined with other classes or work responsibilities.

Are scholarships or financial assistance available?
For-credit SALT students are eligible for regular Union scholarships and financial aid. If you think you may have financial difficulties, we encourage you to contact us to discuss options.

Should I enroll for academic credit or choose the non-credit option?
It all depends. You will want to consider questions such as:

  • What are my long-term career goals?
  • Do I plan to pursue a college degree in the future?
  • Have I looked at what financial aid I may be eligible for from Union?
